Left / Year progress widget

A year progress widget for iPhone

In January the year feels endless. By October it is nearly gone. A year progress widget keeps that in view: the whole year as a grid, the days already used dimmed, and the days or percentage left beside it. Left’s Year widget is free and works on your Home Screen and Lock Screen.

What a year progress widget shows

A year progress widget answers one question: how much of this year is left? Some show a bar or a percentage. Left shows the year as a grid. Each symbol is a day (or a week, or a month, if you prefer), the days that have passed fade out, and the ones still ahead stay solid.

Under the grid you can show the year and either the time left, such as 73 days left, or the percentage left, such as 20% left. You can also hide the text and keep just the grid.

If you were looking for a "day of the year" widget: Left counts what is left rather than numbering the day. For the exact figures, the free percentage of the year calculator shows the days passed, the days left and the percentage to four decimal places.

Why it helps

Time you are not measuring feels unlimited. A grid that loses one dot a day makes the year concrete: you notice when a quarter has gone, you plan the trip before the summer is half over, and you start the project in March rather than meaning to in November. It is a calm reminder, not an alarm, and it works best somewhere you look many times a day.

It pairs well with a countdown to the thing you are working towards and a habit that turns the remaining days into action. There is more on the idea in what year progress is and why to track it.

How to add the Year widget

There is nothing to create first. Time Left is built into Left, so the widget works as soon as the app is installed.

On your Home Screen

  1. Install Left and open it once.
  2. Touch and hold an empty part of your Home Screen until the apps jiggle, tap Edit in the top-left corner, then choose Add Widget.
  3. Search for Left and choose Year.
  4. Pick Small, Medium or Large, tap Add Widget, then tap Done.
  5. To customize it, touch and hold the widget and tap Edit Widget.

What you can change

On your Lock Screen

  1. Touch and hold your Lock Screen, tap Customize, then choose Lock Screen.
  2. Tap the widget area and choose Left, then Year. The circular version shows the number or percentage left in the middle; the rectangular version gives it more room; the inline version sits in the line of text above the time.
  3. Tap Done.

Inside the app, the same grids live in Time Left, with tabs for your life, the year, month, week, today and the current hour. Left widgets also work in StandBy like any other widget. If you would rather have the year grid as your Lock Screen background, see the days left wallpaper.

What is free

All of it. Time Left and its widgets, including Year, Months, Month, Week, Day and Everything, are free, with no limit on how many you add. Left Premium is only needed for extras such as unlimited countdowns and habits, Planner and fasting; prices are shown in the app before you buy.

Two honest limits: Left is an iPhone app that needs iOS 26 or later, and iOS decides exactly when widgets refresh, so a widget can occasionally lag the app by a little.

Want the numbers without installing anything? Try the time left in the year calculator, the time passed in the year calculator or the days until New Year countdown.

Questions

Is the year progress widget free?

Yes. Left’s Year widget and the other Time Left widgets are free, with no limit on how many you add. You do not need Left Premium for them.

Can it show a percentage instead of days?

Yes. Touch and hold the widget, tap Edit Widget, and set Time left to percentage. The widget then shows the share of the year that is left.

Can I put year progress on my Lock Screen?

Yes. The Year widget has circular, rectangular and inline Lock Screen versions. Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose Lock Screen and add Left’s Year widget.

Does the widget show the day of the year?

It shows what is left (days, weeks, months, hours or minutes) rather than numbering the day. The free percentage of the year calculator on this site shows the days passed and the days left if you need exact figures.

Can I show weeks left in the year instead of days?

Yes. In Edit Widget, change Show time as to weeks. The grid then has one symbol per week, and the text shows weeks left.
