When does fall begin?

The first day of fall is the autumnal equinox — the moment the sun crosses the celestial equator heading south (Northern Hemisphere) or north (Southern Hemisphere). Day and night are nearly equal in length everywhere on Earth at this moment.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the autumnal equinox falls around September 22–23. In the Southern Hemisphere, autumn begins around March 20–21.

Why fall/autumn feels different

After the equinox, days shorten noticeably as the sun sets earlier. Temperatures drop, leaves change colour (in temperate regions), and the long days of summer give way to the cozy evenings of autumn. Many people find autumn the most productive season — cooler temperatures and shorter days tend to encourage focus and routine.

Halloween and fall

Halloween on October 31st falls about five weeks after the autumnal equinox in the Northern Hemisphere. Check the days until Halloween tool to see both countdowns side by side.
