When does summer start?

Astronomically, summer begins at the summer solstice — the moment the sun reaches its northernmost point relative to the celestial equator. This produces the longest day and shortest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere (around June 20–21), and the longest night / shortest day in the Southern Hemisphere.

In the Southern Hemisphere, the summer solstice falls around December 21–22 — the same moment as the Northern Hemisphere's winter solstice.

Meteorological vs astronomical summer

Meteorologists define summer as June–August (Northern) or December–February (Southern) for easier climate comparisons. This tool uses the astronomical solstice.

The longest day of the year

On the summer solstice, the sun is above the horizon for more hours than any other day of the year at your latitude. For places near the Arctic Circle, the sun may not set at all — the famous "midnight sun." Regions near the equator see much smaller differences between seasons.
