How to be accountable to friends

Habits and streaks are easier to keep when someone else knows they matter to you. Left's accountability features stay private and intentional: you choose the exact habit or streak, you choose the friend, and they only see what you invited them to watch. It is different from posting progress publicly — the friend becomes a watcher for one selected Since item.

How accountability works

You choose a specific streak or habit and invite a friend to watch it. If they accept, they become a watcher for that item.

This is private by default. Friends do not automatically see all your habits, all your streaks, or the other friends you invited. They only see the shared item you selected.

Step 1 — Add the friend first

Before you can ask someone to keep you accountable, they need to be your friend on Left.

Open Friends, tap +, and either share Your invite link or search for them with Search by @username. Once the request is accepted, you can share individual habits and streaks with them.

Step 2 — Share a habit or streak

You can share when creating or editing a habit or streak.

  1. Open Since.
  2. Create a new habit or streak, or open an existing one.
  3. Turn on Friends.
  4. Tap Add a friend.
  5. Choose the friend you want to invite.
  6. Save the habit or streak.

Friends you invite may appear as Invited until they accept. Once accepted, they appear as Watching.

Step 3 — What your friend can see

When a friend accepts the invite, they can see that shared streak or habit and its progress.

For habits, they can see whether you complete or miss the habit. For streaks, they can see whether the streak is still going or has restarted. From the shared detail screen, they can send support or congratulations when the app allows it.

This makes accountability lightweight: your friend can encourage you before a habit is complete, or send congratulations after you complete it.

Step 4 — Remove sharing later

You can stop sharing at any time.

Open the shared habit or streak, go to the Friends section, and remove the friend from the item. If you are watching someone else's item, you can leave it from the shared item details.

Removing sharing stops that person from watching the item going forward.

Notification options

Friend activity notifications are optional.

Go to SettingsFriends to choose what can notify you:

  1. Friends requests
  2. Ahead dates invites
  3. Streaks & habits invites
  4. Friends Since completions
  5. Friends Since missed
  6. Support from friends

Your friend can choose their own notification settings too. They may decide to get alerts when you complete or miss shared Since activity, or turn those notifications off.
