Best Exam Countdown Apps for iPhone in 2026: 7 Compared for Students
Checked 20 October 2026. Every competitor detail below comes from that app's US App Store page and Apple's public lookup data, fetched that day. Left details come from the app itself.
An exam countdown keeps the date in front of you: how many days until the first paper, which exam comes next, how much of the term is left. Some apps do only that; others are full student planners where exams sit next to classes, homework and grades. Here are seven worth comparing on iPhone, and what each one is best at.
Disclosure: we make Left, so we have put it first. Here is why, and when another app suits you better.

Quick verdict
- Best for your next exam on the Lock Screen, with free widgets and a Live Activity on the day: Left.

1. Left: your next exam where you'll see it
Left is a time awareness app for iPhone. Exams go in Ahead, its countdown list, next to habits in Since and the time left in the week, month and year in Time Left.
- Add an exam: tap Add a date ahead, type the subject or import it with From calendar, and set Starts to the exam's date and time. For a whole exam season, set Until to the last paper and Left shows how much of it is done.
- Count it your way: Show as... counts in hours, days, weeks, months or years; tap the preview card to add a symbol, a color and a photo.
- Reminders: 1 month, 2 weeks, 1 week, 2 days or 1 day before, at a time you choose.
- On exam day: Get ready for the start shows a live countdown on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island in the 4 hours before the exam starts, and Get the final countdown does the same before Until.
- Widgets: the Ahead widget on the Home Screen and as a circular or rectangular Lock Screen widget, and the Time Ahead list for up to 3 exams (medium) or 7 (large). The Month and Week widgets show how much of the month or week is left.
- Revision habits: a habit such as "Revise for 30 minutes" with an interactive widget you tap to log, and its completion grid.
- Left Premium extras: unlimited countdowns and habits, and the Focus timer for study sessions with breaks.

Price: free to download, with no ads. The free plan includes 2 countdowns (plus 2 habits, 2 streaks and 2 Aims), counted over every item you've ever created, so deleting one doesn't free a slot. Pros: free Lock Screen and Home Screen countdown widgets; exam-day Live Activities; exams, revision habits and a progress bar for the whole exam season in one app.

How we chose
- Search first: we searched the US App Store for exam countdown, study planner and school planner apps on 20 October 2026 and read what ranks for "exam countdown app".
- Kept: apps updated in the last 12 months with at least a thousand ratings that either count down to exams or hold exam dates in a student planner. Left is included because we make it.
- Also considered: ROOT38's general Countdown: Event Countdown (the same developer as Exam Countdown, with Lock Screen and StandBy widgets in Premium), Smart Timetable (a class timetable; exam dates aren't mentioned), and two new exam apps, Exam Countdown & Study Planner and examday, which had one rating each. myHomework, Egenda, iStudiez and Sigma Planner were left out because they haven't been updated in over a year.
- Sources: each app's own App Store page, including release notes, privacy labels and age-rating notes, and Apple's lookup data. No paid placements, and no developer reviewed this page.
