How to Build a Streak on Your iPhone
A streak is one of the few productivity ideas that survives contact with reality. It works for the same reason loss aversion works: breaking a chain hurts more than building a new one.
Streak vs habit — pick the right one
In Left, both live under Since, but they behave differently.
- Streak: elapsed time since a start date. Quitting smoking, days sober, days since the last bad meeting.
- Habit: a thing you check in on. Daily, weekdays only, three times a week — Left counts the completions and computes the streak from there.
If your goal is "keep doing X", use a habit. If your goal is "stay clean of Y", use a streak.
Pick a schedule that you'll actually hit
The classic mistake is "every day." Most habits don't need every day. Set the schedule slightly lower than what feels good — six days a week, three times a week, weekdays only. A streak you finish is worth ten streaks you abandon.
Set up the widget
- Open Left → Since → tap + → choose Habit.
- Name it, pick the schedule, pick a symbol and color.
- Touch and hold your Home Screen → + → search Left → pick a habit or streak widget.
- Long-press → Edit Widget → pick the habit.
Complete from the widget directly — no need to open the app.
Share it for accountability
Add a friend in Left, then tap Share on the habit and pick them. They can keep you accountable and send kudos or congratulations when you keep going.
If you break it
Don't restart from zero in your head. The streak number is just data. The actual habit is the daily action — start that again tomorrow.
